India, the land of myriad hues and colours, never fails to surprise you. The seventh largest nation in the world–bounded by the great Himalayas in the north and caressed by the foaming Indian Ocean in the south–India is a haven for the tourists.

Its rich flora and fauna; thousands of year old cultures and traditions; delicious cuisines; awe-inspiring forts and havelis of a bygone era; majestic monuments and historical palaces whose each crevice whispers in your ears the tales of valor and chivalry of the erstwhile warriors and rulers; friendly and smiling people; and pristine and beautiful sea beaches–inspire the tourists to visit this beautiful country time and again.

Many travellers come to India to cleanse themselves and find the true meaning of their life through spiritual and religious tours. Many others come here to have first-hand experience of the throbbing and pulsating India, while many others come here just to have some fun and enjoyment in peaceful, sylvan surroundings. The purpose may be different but the destination remains the same: India. Certainly, which other country in the world can offer so many surprises and attractions?

India could be explored through various means, by making use of the many major travel routes that interconnect majority of the tourist hotspots of the country. Several attractive tour packages suiting all budgets, and cooperative tour operators and travel agencies ensure that travellers to the country visit the many destinations of their choice without facing any problem.

Luxury India Trains, as the name suggests, come with luxuries befitting the rajas and the maharajas of the bygone era, and give the tourists the opportunity of a lifetime to explore the wonder that is India in the best possible way.

Such trains are different from the others in the sense that they cater to only the most discerning–mainly those who are rich and famous. Operational from October to March, the Fairy Queen commences its journey on the second and the fourth Saturdays of the month. This heritage train has a 50-seater AC coach. It begins its journey from Delhi and goes to Alwar and Sariksa Wildlife Sanctuary on a two day-one night journey before returning back to the national capital.

The main attraction of Fairy Queen is that it’s run by the oldest locomotive in regular operation in India. The passengers enjoy the sight of the locomotive sitting behind a large glass window in the train.

The pantry car attached to the train serves mouth-watering cuisine to the passengers.

Fairy Queen is mainly for the lovers of wildlife as it takes them to Sairksa Wildlife Sanctuary and gives them the opportunity to enjoy jeep safari in the wilds of the sanctuary and have a rendezvous with the big cat, the tiger. There’s something for the culturally inclined passengers also. Cultural programmes are organised at the grand Sariksa Palace.

The Golden Chariot

The Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation run Golden Chariot is the latest in the fleet of luxury train services in India, and covers the various destinations within Karnataka.

Taking its name from the stone chariot of the Hampi ruins, the Golden Chariot starts its journey from the state capital Bangalore, proceeding to Srirangapatnam, Mysore, Kabini Sanctuary, and Shravanabelagola. From here, it leaves for Belur which is associated with 11th century Hoysala architecture, Halebidu, Hampi, Badami, Aihole, Pattadakal and Shravanabelagola, before culminating in Goa.

The itinerary enables a viewing of palaces, wildlife and beaches. The Golden Chariot promises a golden experience with privacy, comfort and a host of lively attractions all through the seven-night-and-eight-day journey.

The train’s interiors have been inspired by the opulence of Mysore and Hoysala architecture, and each of the cabins is equipped with wi-fi, LCD TV, writing desk and a wardrobe. A lounge bar and two restaurants (Nal and Ruchi), a business centre and wellness facilities (a spa and a gym) are also onboard.

By: Sanjay Kumar Pandey

Visiting San Francisco for the first time? Ready to tour Alcatraz and Fisherman’s Wharf? I’ve found a few helpful tips for how to travel cheap and have a great visit to this charming city.

Here’s a tip for the cable cars. I actually figured this one out on my last stay. There was a stop right in front of my hotel over by the Wharf, and for a couple days it was the stop my friends and I used exclusively — to the tune of about an hour’s wait on every occasion. Now, we did use this time to people watch and also to run back up to our room to get things we forgot, but it was not exactly what we wanted to be spending our time doing. Well, on the second evening, we happened to be walking from our hotel in the other direction to visit a shop, and lo and behold, there was another cable car stop. And guess what? No line at all. We used that stop from then on. So don’t assume that the busiest cable car stop which might be right in plain sight is the ONLY stop near you. Check out the next closest and you may save a lot of time that way.

San Francisco has many gourmet restaurants, and you’ll want to try a few. How to travel cheap and still enjoy the food in these restaurants? Go for lunch instead of dinner. You will still get to sample the same food but just smaller portions. And less crowds. If you still would rather go for dinner, make sure you call ahead for reservations. Or, here’s a hint if you forget to call. Check to see if there is seating in the bar. There often is and sometimes you can just bypass the entire waiting crowd of people in the lobby and sit down at a table in the bar.

Is Alcatraz worth the trip? I think so and so do hordes of others, as it remains one of the most-visited tourist attractions in the state. As far as how to travel cheap, you can check the local city magazines for coupons, but whatever you do, don’t scrimp and save money by not paying for the audio tour, as it is a fascinating narrative performed by former inmates and guards. Really very interesting and worthwhile. Again, be sure to reserve early. Even though there are numerous tours throughout the day they fill up fast.

For yet another tip on how to travel cheap, check out some of the great museums such as the National Maritime Museum or the San Francisco Cable Car Museum. These are free but call to check the hours before heading over just in case they are closed on the day you plan to visit.

There are also many annual events like arts and wine festivals, parades, and the strawberry festival that are also great how-to-travel-cheap ideas and ways to plan some inexpensive fun while visiting this most beautiful and charm-filled city.

By: Terrie Bryan

Mark Kahler over at http://www.about.com exposes some really common myths a lot of travelers have. In this great article he gives you the real scoop about things like: when you should or should not use frequent flyer miles for vacation travel, whether being the low price bidder on an online reservation site will result in being treated like a second-class guest at a hotel and whether “duty free” merchandise are really bargains. adventuretravel.about.com/od/adventuresforbeginners/a/summercamps.htm Summer Camp For Kids and Adults. While I was at about.com, I also found this article by Carla Land about some great summer camps for kids AND adults in North America. These camps offer everything from wilderness survival schools to mountaineering, kayaking, rock climbing, rafting, marine science and conservation. Do you have a taste for a “spooky” adventure vacation? Then check out another post by Carla Land about several tours of some very haunted houses and other haunted tours. After all, what could add more “adventure” to your adventure travel than a few ghosts? Check out adventuretravel.about.com/od/hauntedhistoricalspots Haunted Historical Spots.

The Galapagos Islands straddle the equator 600 miles west of Ecuador. Discovered in 1535 by a Spanish Bishop and made famous by Darwin’s visit in 1835 and subsequent publication of The Origin of Species, the islands comprise an archipelago of 19 extraordinary islands. Each island is unique and offers a stunning variety of wildlife and scenic vistas. Well acclimated to visitors, the wildlife is always out and waiting for you. Watch out for nesting birds as you hike along the many trails, and then swim with the acrobatic sea lions as they dance through the clear waters. Tortoises roam the highlands, while marine iguanas feed on the green algae near shore. The Galapagos Islands are an exceptional year round destination and one that everyone should visit in their lifetime.

The Galapagos are also wonderful family destination. What better classroom than the “Enchanted Isles”, where young people can explore and learn in a safe and exciting environment. Some operators offer dedicated family departures while others offer discounts for people under 18.

It is possible to visit the Galapagos on your own, but traveling with a guide can enrich your experience immeasurably. Ferries link several of the islands together, but to visit most of the outer islands, you must be on a cruise ship of some sort. Keep in mind that, as in most places, you get what you pay for.

Some expeditions offer the option of camping on shore for a night in a specially designed tented camp. Others offer pre or post extensions visiting Macchu Pichu in Peru. This is a great combination and definitely something to consider if the timings work for you.

Some ideas to consider when choosing a Galapagos Cruise:

1. Boats. From Sail boats, to motor yachts, to luxury ships, the Galapagos Islands have them all. They come in different sizes and price ranges, with large ships (100 passengers) offering all sorts of extra amenities, and smaller ones, a more intimate setting. While sailboats have a romantic charm to them, the cabins are usually a bit smaller, the deck space a bit more limited, and because of the distances, they usually only sail once or twice on a cruise. Motor yachts usually offer a more stable ride than sail boats, though in the Galapagos, this isn’t usually a major issue. That said, there is nothing like the feel of the wind through your hair as you silently glide through the rich waters of these enchanted isles.

2. Itinerary. In an attempt to limit the number of visitors at each landing, every ship has a fixed itinerary, so you must find the best combination of ship and itinerary that works for you.

3. Guides. The quality of the guide is paramount to your experience, so it is important to ensure you have the best guides available. Each ship will have guides on board that will split the group into smaller groups. Even on larger ships, you will still be in a small group, thereby maintaining the intimacy of your adventure.

If all of this control seems a bit much, consider that by limiting the number of people that visit each landing, each day, and ensuring that they have a trained guide with them when they visit, the islands and wildlife are still thriving today despite an increasing number of visitor each year. Visiting the Galapagos today, is not far from what it was twenty years ago, and that is due in large part to the local efforts to maintain the pristine environment.

By: Colin A McNulty

North Carolina may be most widely known for the tranquil shores of it’s picturesque beaches. The coast of North Carolina covers over three hundred miles of pristine beaches, wetlands and marshes. Needless to say, there is something for everyone on the coast of the Tarheel state. From the historic lighthouses, museums, golf courses and fishing piers – a vacation to one of North Carolina’s many beaches will be enjoyable for everyone in your family.

The Outer Banks: The Outer Banks is the 200 mile string of barrier islands that stretch from the south east corner of Virginia to roughly half the North Carolina coast. The Outer Banks are a popular vacation destination, with it’s vast beach front and temperate climate.

The Crystal Coast: The Crystal Coast stretches roughly 85 miles and extents from Cape Lookout National Seashore, it includes 56 miles of protected beaches. This location is perfect for families, diving and fishing are two of the major activities for visitors to the area. The beaches are a sandy white, and the water is a beautiful crystal blue.

New Hanover Beaches: Home to the popular Kure Beach and Cape Fear, the stretch of land known as New Hanover Beach is roughly 15 miles south of Wilmington. The population of the surrounding areas is very small. So you can expect your vacation to any of the New Hanover Beaches to be very quiet and secluded. This is perfect for a weekend getaway.

Brunswick Beaches: Located in Brunswick County – the Brunswick Beaches communities are also small and somewhat isolated. Bald Head Island is the most recognizable of the all the beaches as the 1989 hit film, Weekend at Bernie’s was filmed there. Cars aren’t allowed on Bald Head Island – and the population of the village is under two hundred people. But don’t let that keep you away. Bald Head island provides a peaceful getaway perfect for families and couples in search of a relaxing time.

If you are looking for an affordable beach vacation you should definitely include at least one of the beaches along the North Carolina coast on your list.

By: Bella H

Boutique hotels are taking the world by storm, and there are a couple of new breeds springing up in India. The first caters to the really rich, creating a designer mirage of the Merchant-Ivory meets yogi-Vogue variety; the other is a collection of almost private homes that offer a mixture of family life and desi cooking.

Explore the luxury and grandeur of Rajasthan royalty in one of the Taj Group’s boutique palace hotels. The group manages three of the world’s most celebrated boutique hotels (of the more decadent variety) housed in palaces throughout India:

Jaipur

The hot pink city of Jaipur is not only the state capital but the retail capital, where designers such as Isabelle Fraysse and Celia Forner Venturi get their jewellery and accessories manufactured. This is the city for gemstones, abounding with skeins of rough-cut emeralds and rubies.

Rambagh Palace: Sleep a la Maharaja in Rambagh’s presidential Suryavanshi suite, which was part of the personal chambers of the royal family.

Udaipur

Home to the Kingdom of Mewar, Udaipur lies south of the Aravalli ranges; lush rolling green hills following the monsoon contrast vividly against the parched spurs in the arid season, with the City of Lakes and Palaces in its shadows.

Taj Lake Palace: Constructed, because Maharana Jagat Singh II took umbrage at his father’s refusal to allow him to have moonlit picnics with the ladies of his Zenama (women’s quarters) on the neighbouring island palace. No wonder James Bond picked the summer palace of the royals, which remains a quintessential pleasure palace.

Jodhpur

Jodhpur is encompassed by the Umaid Bhawan to the east and the Meherengh Fort to the west; the fort is one of the best preserved heritage sites in Rajasthan with a collection of historical artefacts dating back hundreds of years.

Umaid Bhawan: Commissioned in 1929 and designed by the British architect H.V. Lanchester, the palace took 16 years to complete and stands now as a perfectly-preserved monument to the art-deco style of the ‘Twenties. Inside, it’s a treasure trove of elaborate furnishings and finely worked exports.

Homey Boutique Hotels

Equal to these palace retreats in comfort and ambiance, if not in scale, are some smaller boutique hotels of the homespun variety:

The Cottage: A very lovely hill home that has been opened to guests by its owner Bhuvan Kumari. They serve delicious, homemade food, and there is nothing arch or fancy about the place. The cottage’s gallery of exquisite doorways and window frames recalls the time when the kings of Nepal ruled the region.

Sitla Estate: An old apple estate further east, where you can sit on the roof and watch the sunrise over the Himalayan peak of Nanda Devi. Run by Vikram Maira, a delicious action man who doubles as kitchen genius, the atmosphere breathes warmth and simplicity.

By: Tom Ingrams

Traveling is one of those things virtually everybody would love to do, even though high price ticket costs usually can keep your travel plans from ever leaving see any heights. One popular destination for travelers is India. This is a beautiful country with wealthy culture and with an impressive landscape.

When you go here some of the most widespread and popular airports to fly into are Mumbai, Bangalore and Delhi. Which one you choose depends partly on where you would like to go, partly on where you can get the cheapest tickets.

The departure city flights to India typically range from quite cheap up to about five hundred dollars. Climate is also of concern when you are booking a flight to India. There are essentially four seasons with winter being about the same as in west, the weather is cool and dry. March through May is the summer months and temperatures in might sometimes be unbearable. Overall, the simplest time to fly to Mumbai and Delhi would be mid-September through spring. The most affordable time to fly to India is throughout the Monsoon season, June through September, thanks to serious rain. Keep in mind that Monsoons will often offset plane schedules and sometimes fully shut off electricity.

Looking for good flight deals on the web or booking through airline websites directly are both fast and efficient ways that to seek out flights, though not perpetually the cheapest. Some nice websites to check for deals include Kayak and Orbitz. Though it is a chance, some times waiting till the last minute (some weeks or so before the departure date) will extremely pay off as airlines are providing lower prices to fill the seats on upcoming flights.

If you’re a student there are also lots of internet sites dedicated to finding low cost student air fares. A terribly well-liked web site for students is S.T.A. Travel. Here you can find out is they currently run monthly deals to multiple destination cities and the travel agents can work closely with you to seek out the best deal for you out there.

Some airlines like Korean and Cathay Pacific run deals on some flights to India, but usually the discounted fares they offer don’t seem to be given to the customer directly. Travel agencies often purchase seats in bulk at a discounted price and pass the savings on to you. Therefore it would be wise to appear into a Indian travel agency in your area. This might be a sure way to search out regarding any current flight deals.

Again, depending on your departure city, date and your relationship with flying, it might be a good idea to stay on an open mind to multiple flight connections. In a perfect world it would be the best to steer onto one plane and a matter of hours later walk off at your destination….then once more, in an ideal world, everyone would fly in their private jet.

If you’re someone who can tolerate multiple take offs and landings while not running the risk of air sickness, allowing multiple connections it may be a sure method to knock some hundred dollars off your price tag price. Also, if you allow some flexibility along with your travels dates your search results can also yield greater savings.

By: Johnny Smith

Even at a time when the number of tourists interested in visiting places of historical interest has dwindled to some extent, Prague has maintained its repute as one of the most popular historical destinations of the world. The city with architectural splendors in the form of palaces, museums and galleries is a must visit for those who have a keen interest in history or architecture. This city never ceases to surprise people and has something new to offer at all times. As a result, it is commonly believed that one trip to Prague is not enough because it has a lot to offer. Prague is known as the home to several well-known museums some of which that date back to the 18th century.

Lobkowicz Palace in Prague houses perhaps the most famous museum in the city. This vast palace has a museum that treasures some of the most precious art prices and antiques possessed by the Lobkowicz family. The Prague national museum is another well known museum in the city. Located in the Wenceslas Square, this museum is to be found inside a building which is the landmark of the Square. Being the oldest museum in the city, the National Museum hosts several exhibits that reflect the glorious past of the country. In addition, this museum is known for exhibiting some rare paintings by world famous European artists.

If the National Museum is famous for reflecting the history of Czech republic, the Museum of the City of Prague is a tribute to Prague city. Its chief attraction is the 20 sq ft model prepared by Antonin Langweil which depicts the city. Furthermore, there are some unique sculptures and ancient artifacts housed by this museum. Likewise, the National Gallery at Veletrzni Palace and Museum of Communism also deserve a special mention as these museums have depicted history from close quarters enabling visitors to travel back in time.

By: Roland Poitevin
